With just their parents around, the couple got married in the simplest way at their residence on Sunday morning. The bride, a 26-year-old woman hailing from Gangavalli in Salem district and working in a private firm in Vadapalani in Chennai was engaged to a 28-year-old youth in the month of January.

She showed symptoms of COVID-19 when screened at Nathakarai check post in Thalaivasal on her way to Salem from Chennai on May 21. When officials of the health department tracked her and family members to their residence and tested them again, it was found that nine out of 12 persons, who came from Chennai for marriage tested positive for COVID-19.

Yet, heeding to their desperate plea, the officials permitted the couple to tie the knot in the presence of just five persons by following all health protocols. After marriage, the health department officials quarantined the couple and other family members, who took part in the marriage.

Also the entire house was disinfected and measures were taken to prevent the spread of the infection. The families of both the bride and bridegrooms also assured to extend cooperation as per guidelines issued by the department.

The officials of the health department said that there is nothing to fear as family members did not have any complications and had shown only mild symptoms for COVID-19.
