Earlier, Lakshmi who was given additional charge of the Veppankuppam police station as the inspector was on medical leave diverted seized jiggery to a distiller for illegal gratification. The Veppankuppam police on May 4 stopped a mini lorry carrying 150 tonnes of jiggery and as the area is notorious for illicit arrack brewing, the police questioned the purpose of the consignment and found it be meant of illegal hooch trade.
The cops headed by Lakshmi seized the jiggery, but did not account it in the records and dismissed it as routine vehicle check.
But sources revealed that Lakshmi has indirectly handed the seized jiggery to another distiller and also was hand in glove with locals to continue the illegal trade. Based on complaints, the DIG ordered a probe into the incident and found it to be bona fide. DIG Kamini immediately ordered the suspension of inspector Lakshmi.
