Muslims mostly held prayers with their close circle of relatives and friends at home by following social distancing norms. “It is customary for us to gather in hundreds in a spacious ground to offer prayers on this day. This year was quite unusual as we offered prayers on the terrace of our home and greeted everyone over phone,” said R Abdul Rahman, a resident of Karumbukadai. Moreover, the festivity was low key as the All Islamic Movement Federation in Coimbatore had sent out a message not to indulge in unnecessary expenses as part of the celebration.

However, it has not dampened the spirit of the celebration with people in Tiruchy not missing out on wearing new clothes. A Sirajudeen from Thillai Nagar in Tiruchy said, “We all had purchased new dress as it is mandatory. Thanks to a few shops that could sell readymade dresses.” Muslim dominated Ambur and Vaniyambadi towns in Tirupattur district witness a muted Eid celebrations. The two big Idgah grounds were closed and police was posted in front of mosques in the towns to ensure lockdown norms.
