Officials in the district said that Sathanur dam, one of the largest and oldest dams in the State with a full tank level (FTL) of 119 feet, was inspected by a Central team to implement the Dam Rehabilitation Implementation Project (DRIP I). Subsequently, civil and hydro-mechanical works were carried out successfully at the dam to the tune of Rs 5 crore under the project.

Impressed with the quality of work done, DRIP II was proposed, which included changing the huge main shutter and additional shutters on the sluices. The work – to be undertaken with funding from the World Bank - once completed would ensure better flow and pressure till the tail end areas in Tiruvannamalai, Villipuram and Kallakurichi districts, officials added.

The dam would also cater to crops in 12,593 acres through 94 irrigation tanks via its left and right bank canals.

Already, staff quarters, the dam park and other tourism-related works have been completed under DRIP I, they said adding that such changes were necessary to attract tourists.

Meanwhile the controversy-ridden Shenbagathoppu dam in Polur taluk, whose construction was completed in 2007 but was unable to store water due to faulty shutters, is expected to be ready before the onset of the southwest monsoon, officials revealed. “Work estimated at Rs.16.37 crore is in its final stages as the dam’s seven shutters are being replaced,” officials averred.

Tenders are expected to be floated for the second phase work at a cost of Rs 17.64 crore which would include civil works, quarters and creation of a new dam park, officials said. The dam’s non-functioning had been a constant irritant for the district with farmers regularly flaying the poor construction and demanding water for crops.
