Bharathi gets conditional bail in Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes case
A city court on Monday granted conditional bail to DMK organising secretary and Rajya Sabha Member RS Bharathi in a case registered under Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. He was also asked to execute a personal bond of Rs 10,000 and surety of Rs 10,000 by the court.

Granting the bail, fifth additional court judge MN Senthil Kumar said, “The petitioner has to appear before the investigation officer as and when required and should execute the bond and surety.”
Speaking to reporters outside the court, Bharathi said, “Instead of arresting the DMK members and taking revenge, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami should listen to opposition party leader Stalin’s idea to save the people of Chennai and rest of Tamil Nadu from coronavirus.”
The case was filed by Athi Tamilar Makkal Katchi leader Kalyanasundaram alleging that Bharathi made derogatory statements against the community at his party indoor meeting in February.
Central Crime Branch (CCB) arrested Bharathi on May 23 for his alleged derogatory remarks against the SC and ST community. But soon after his arrest, Principal Sessions and District Court released him on interim bail till June 1 since his family members are doctors and it would endanger the inmates. The court also directed him to surrender before the court on that day.
Eventually, the CCB moved the Madras High Court to cancel Bharathi’s interim bail. The HC, dismissing the petition directed the principal sessions judge to hear Bharathi’s bail application on the day of his surrender. The MP surrendered before the additional judge on Monday and moved a bail application.
