Sellur Raju finds substandard rice during spot check, suspends PDS salesman

In a swift response to a consumer’s complaint on the quality of commodities being distributed under the PDS, Cooperation Minister Sellur K Raju on Monday travelled in a motorbike to a ration shop at Pandiyarajapuram near Bethaniyapuram in Madurai and pulled up a salesman.

When the Minister was leaving after a relief distribution programme to help the poor at Bethaniyapuram, Karthigaiselvi, a woman resident walked up to the minister and complained that a salesman was delivering underweight and low-quality commodity (rice). 

When confronted, there was no proper response from the salesman, she informed Raju. Moreover, the salesman behaved in a rude manner and abused her, the Minister was told. The Minister, immediately the minister rode pillioin with a party cadre, who came for the relief distribution, on his bike to the ration shop. The consumer was also taken to the ration shop by another cadre. The salesman was shocked to see the Minister himself conducting checks in the shop.

Sellur Raja, who found rice to be of poor quality, enquired with the salesman Dharmendran in the presence of the aggrieved consumer and verified the point of sale device. The Minister not convinced with the salesman’s explanation suspended him on the spot. Besides, the Minister got annoyed at the presence of a stranger who had no role in the shop, and instructed the police personnel to take him away.
