The Chief Minister said when the government in UT received the letter from the Centre in this regard, it was apprised that Puducherry could not be treated as an ordinary Union Territory as it is one with a legislative Assembly and no decision be taken without consulting the government. A letter in this regard was written to the Centre and no reply was received yet.

He said Electricity is in the general list and no amendment could be made in the Parliament without the recommendation of the states.

Meanwhile, the famers in Cauvery Delta staged a black flag protest against the Electricity Amendment Bill on Thursday. Members of Cauvery Farmers Protection Association and Uzhavan koodu organization staged a protest in paddy field.

They said, curtailing free electricity would not only affect the farming community, but also would certainly impact food production that would result in scarcity. They appealed to the state government to pressurise the Centre not to pass the Bill which is against the farmers. They also sought the state government not to support the Bill by all means.
