Two Vellore women stop illegal marriages by their husbands

Two women stopped two marriages involving their husbands in Vellore on Wednesday. One of it was a second marriage and another a forced marriage.

In the first incident, Ramachandran (45) of Vellore married Kamali 19 years ago. They have two sons. But, he had many extra marital affairs. So Kamali left her husband with her sons. Meanwhile, Ramachandran became friendly with Fathima (35) of Karur and decided to marry her on Wednesday.

When Kamali heard of this, she with her two sons went to the marriage hall and picked up a quarrel. She also complained to the Bagayam police. Police after enquiry transferred the case to the Vellore All Women Police Station which has called Fathima and three of the relatives for enquiry. On witnessing the commotion at the marriage hall, Ramachandran fainted on the spot and was admitted to the Vellore Government Medical College Hospital.

In the second incident, a woman of Govindareddypalayam complained to the Ariyur police that her husband was trying to get her 19-year-old son married to a 25-year-old girl who was mentally unsound in Vellore as the girl’s relatives had promised a heavy dowry.

Police rushed to the spot and after enquiry ordered that arrangements for the marriage scheduled on June 12 be stopped as the boy was yet to attain marriageable age. The issue was then transferred to the Vellore district social security officer for further investigation.
