State Higher Education secretary in a letter to registrars of all state universities had underlined that all universities/colleges were to remain closed till further orders.

But, for unknown reasons all staff of Tiruvalluvar university were ordered to report for duty from May 18 following a six-day weekly schedule.

Teaching faculty in letters to the registrar-in-charge Dr Syed Shafi dated June 1 and 6 requested him to exempt them from attendance. Adding to their woes, on Monday, buses were absent too. When asked the registrar said, “Only the VC Thamarai Selvi can answer why the university is functioning. She is in Chennai and will return on Tuesday.”
