State recruits over 2,800 medical professionals

As the COVID-19 cases continue to spike in Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Wednesday approved recruitment of over 2,800 medical personnel to support the battle against the pandemic.

Following the approval, Health Minister C Vijaya Baskar announced the appointment of 574 post graduate doctors (non service post graduate) at a monthly salary of Rs 75,000. As many as 665 doctors, 365 lab technicians and 1,230 multipurpose health personnel were also appointed. The monthly salary of doctors will be Rs 60,000, Rs 15,000 per month for lab technicians and Rs 12,000 for multipurpose health personnel.The appointment of the healthcare professionals has been issued on a contract basis for three months, and the appointed personnel are in the process of joining the duty.These appointments have been made as part of Phase 2 of additional appointments made to combat the requirements of additional healthcare staff for treatment and management of COVID-19 patients.

In Phase 1, the government had recruited more than 9,000 medical personnel including 530 doctors, 4,893 nurses, and 1,508 lab technicians and 2,715 health inspectors.The senior officials of the State Health Department said that this initiative would lessen the burden of the doctors, nurses and other health personnel and improve the treatment in the State.The department has pooled in local outsourcing agencies to recruit medical professionals as per requirements. The State Health Deparment officials have stated that additional staff will be hired as and when required.
