Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K S Alagiri, in a statement here, also asked the AIADMK government not only to stop reducing the area of the world-famous sanctuary but also to take measures to ensure a clean environment over the region.
Alagiri said that the State Board for Wildlife had sent a detailed proposal to the National Board for Wildlife to reduce the buffer area of the sanctuary from 5 sq.km to 3 sq.km to allow private parties to set up industries. “Permission should not be given to set up industries in Vedanthangal area to protect the environment. However, Tamil Nadu Forest Department has proposed to allow industries near Vedanthangal area, which was already opposed by the villagers and people besides several non-governmental organisations,” he alleged.
