This follows a surge in COVID-19 positive cases from 43 on May 31 to 171 on June 12 following lockdown restrictions being relaxed by the government. Similarly, a rice mandi owner and his family also tested positive for the virus recently. Vellore DRO J Parthiban who chaired a meeting of all traders at the Collector’s office on Saturday morning ordered that retail flower and fruit vendors who functioned from the old fish market adjacent to Nethaji market move to the Venketeswara school grounds. No shops would be allowed in the old fish market, he said.

Similarly, flower sellers would also shift to the school grounds while wholesale shops in Nethaji market which functioned between 10 pm and 9 am would be allowed to function only between 10 pm and 7 am, he said. As civic officials planned to disinfect all shops in the huge market complex, the entire complex would be locked down on Sunday for this purpose, Parthiban ended.
