Clampdown hinders medical PG students from paying fee, joining

In an unexpected fallout, the total lockdown in Chennai and its surrounding districts from June 19 to 30 has affected the chances of many PG candidates in medicine and dentistry chosen through NEET from joining the institutions allotted to them and paying fees.

According to former MLA J Parandhaman, “Payment of the joining fee has been hit by the lockdown as banks are also closed. In one such case, a Chennai based female candidate, who was scheduled to join PG studies in dentistry at a private medical institution has been told to pay the fee on or before June 22. But, as banks in the city will be closed and no direct transaction with the public is allowed even when they are allowed to function between 10 am to 2 pm, it will result in many candidates standing to lose their seats due to non-payment of fees.” The institutions demand that such fees be paid only through banks, Parandhaman added.

Asked about travelling to such institutions out of Chennai during the total lockdown he said the Central government’s health and family welfare secretary Preeti Sudan in a letter dated June 9, 2020 had stated that the selected doctors had to join their respective institutions from June 20

“She had also stated that the allotment letter issued by health and family welfare department should be considered as e-pass for reporting at the allotted college from June 15,” Parandhaman added.

Hence if the government allotted a specific day on which such PG candidates could make payment through banks, it would save their future, Parandhaman said and added that moreover, PG candidates were only few in number, banks transactions would not be affected by one or two making payments during the total lockdown.
