42 of 53 virus deaths in city hosps, Tamil Nadu nearing 60K cases
The number of COVID-19 cases reported in a single day reached an all-time high of 2,532 on Sunday with 2,480 in Tamil Nadu testing positive while the remaining arrived from other States or countries. Currently, the State has 59,377 cases of coronavirus.

The daily toll also recorded a high with 53 deaths reported on Sunday. Of the 53, 16 were in private hospitals and 37 were recorded in government hospitals and 50 deceased had several co-morbidities including diabetes mellitus, hypertension, cardiac issues, while three of them did not have any co-morbid conditions. The toll in the State has reached 757.
A total of 42 deaths were reported in several hospitals in Chennai, while four were reported in Chengalpattu, three in Tiruvallur, two in Villupuram and one each in Tiruvannamalai and Tirunelveli. According to Health Department officials, approximately 70 per cent deaths have been reported in individuals aged above 40 years.
The health bulletin also stated that 49,400 cases of COVID-19 have been reported among individuals aged between 13-40 years alone. A total of 2,934 children below 12 have also contracted the virus and 7,043 people aged above 40 years have been infected in Tamil Nadu.
With the government attributing dense population as one of the reasons for the state capital reporting higher number of cases among the districts, Chennai continued to witness largest number of infections with 1,493 people having contracted the disease on Sunday, the bulletin said. Other districts that witnessed a spike include Chengalpattu and Tiruvallur recording 121 and 120 cases respectively. In an all-time high, Cuddalore reported 90 cases while Vellore recorded 87 cases and Tiruvannamalai reported 76 cases. Madurai and Kancheepuram reported 68 and 64 cases respectively.
In the past 24 hours, 31,401 samples were tested, taking the total number of samples tested in the State to 8,92,612 and 1,438 more patients were discharged from several hospitals across the State on Sunday. So far, a total of 32,754 individuals have recovered from COVID-19 in the State. As on Sunday, there were 25,863 active cases. With Delhi registering 3,000 fresh infections, 63 fatalities in 24 hours, total cases have mounted to 59,746 and the toll has touched 2,175. The capital city has now surpassed Tamil Nadu’s tally.
