The RK Nagar MLA in a media statement said most of these students have completed their course, but the final semester exams were not conducted due to coronavirus lockdown. Due to abnormal pandemic situation the state should give away the degree certificates based on the previous exam performances, Dhinakaran said asking the state to follow the Maharashtra model, where students are given certificates. In the case of Class 10 exams, the state took a lot of time to cancel the exams, he noted. Pointing out that the coronavirus cases are increasing in all the districts, Dhinakaran wondered the possibility of holding semester exams. So the state should cancel the final semester exams and promote the students. Such a move will reduce stress and trauma among parents and students during this lockdown period, Dhinakaran said.

In another statement, he urged the state to give the Rs 1,000 relief through door to door distribution. Meanwhile, a DMK functionary who runs a private college and a school in Tirunelveli said, “The AMMK has already raked up the issue and other states are considering promoting college students. I run a private college, but I am not able to take a decision as education is a state subject. If a policy decision is taken, then there will not be any legal issues in future.” There are students in my educational institutions who have lost their fathers due to coronavirus and in my view cancelling the exams and promoting the students will be a correct decision, noted the politician turned academician.
