It is said as the number of COVID-19 positive cases increases day by day, the Tiruchy civic body has decided to transform the corporation schools into quarantine centres and this was opposed by various groups of people as the residents living adjacent to these schools have expressed their dissatisfaction and staged a series of protests.

On Tuesday, the Tamil Nadu Primary School Teachers Association led by its district secretary S Neelakandan approached District Collector S Sivarasu and appealed to reconsider the decision. The teachers said, since the number of cases in the city has been increasing, converting these schools into quarantined centres is not a welcome move.

They said that all these corporation schools are located in the middle of the city and there are thickly populated residential locations around the schools and the parents have been enquiring with the teachers and the office assistants of these schools and have been demanding the teachers to take proper steps to withdraw the idea. They also have been demanding the transfer certificates of their wards. At this juncture, the school education department has asked the respective school administration to stock the free textbooks, slippers and bags before June 30.
