Madurai
Saravanan, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Tirunelveli City, said the post-mortem examinations got over at 12.15 am on Thursday.
The deceased Bennix (31) and his father Jeyaraj (58) of Sathankulam owned a mobile phone shop. The cops attached to Sathankulam station picked up both of them on the eve of June 19 and were arrested the next day for keeping their shop open even after 8 pm, in violation of the lockdown norms.
During the police inquiry, both of them were tortured to death as claimed by their relatives. Irked over the police action, they staged a protest, demanding murder case against the police, who tortured them to death, and refused to accept the bodies unless the guilty were punished, sources said.
Percy, daughter of the victim Jeyaraj, said hopes for justice rested on the Madurai High Court as it has initiated suo motu proceedings in the custodial death case. The magisterial inquiry would yield results on expected lines, she hoped.
