Speaking to reporters at Nambiyur in Erode after inaugurating a slew of development works on Wednesday, Sengottaiyan said, of the 34,652 students, who missed the exam as they were unable to reach the centres due to lockdown, only 718 students have applied to write the exam.

“The results will be announced only after all the students take the exam. This may take some time and even cause a delay in announcement of results for Class 12 State Board examinations,” he said.

The results are announced every year by May, but the COVID-19 crisis has cast uncertainty on the exams triggering concerns among students on their future prospects. The Minister had earlier announced that Class 12 results will be declared in the first week of July.

With just a minimal number of students expressing interest to take the exam, the Minister said that he would consult parents of these students, who have expressed interest in writing the exam, to get their feedback and consult Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami to arrive at a final decision.

On banning online classes, Sengottaiyan said that the state would act based on the directions of the court. He also said that books were being issued to schools and it would be distributed to students after deliberations.
