CB-CID team conducts inquiry with Bennix’s friends

Investigating the custodial deaths of P Jayaraj and his son J Bennix at Sathankulam, the Crime Branch-CID team conducted inquires with five persons, said to be the latter’s friends, on Sunday.

The inquiry that began at noon went on for about two and a half hours, sources said, adding that they would be questioned on Monday as well.

Sources said the investigators were yet to conduct inquiries with doctors at the Kovilpatti Government Headquarters Hospital where Bennix died on June 22 night and his father Jayaraj, the next morning. The departmental inquiry in the hospital would be held this week, sources added.

Meanwhile, with the details of the custodial violence tarnishing the image of the department, particularly the district police, Thoothukudi Superintendent of Police S Jeyakumar has convened a one-hour meeting with the direct recruit sub-inspectors in the district comprising 49 police stations. They would be sensitised on how to handle complainants who approach stations, and also on dealing with the public.

In a related development, the change in composition of the division bench of Madras High Court was widely discussed on social media, with a call to raise the matter with the Registrar General of the High Court to request that Justices PN Prakash and B Pugalendhi, the judges who took up the matter suo motu, should be allowed to continue till the accused were sentenced.
