During the hearing, Tasmac Managing Director R Kirlosh Kumar had submitted before a division bench comprising Justice MM Sundresh and Justice R Hemalatha that if employees charged one rupee beyond the MRP, they were punished with a penalty of Rs 1,000 for every extra rupee, with a maximum of Rs 9,000 plus GST.
If shops were found charging more than Rs 10 per bottle, all the employees of the shop were transferred. If the violation was above Rs 30, the staff concerned and the shop supervisor would be suspended, he said.
He added that to stop MRP violations, Tasmac has been issuing directions and circulars regularly and all senior regional managers and district managers have been instructed to strictly adhere to such directions and ensure that revised MRP was displayed in all outlets.
Also, regarding the allegation that substandard alcohol was sold at Tasmac outlets, the Managing Director submitted that the government was sensitive about maintaining public health and hence takes utmost care in supply of liquor that confirms to Indian Standards and Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) specifications.
R Kullupadaiyachi of Salem had moved the plea seeking to regulate liquor sale and ensure it was not sold above the MRP.
