His response came in the wake of reporters seeking clarification on two Assembly seats (Gudiyattam and Tiruvottriyur) that became vacant in February. As per the EC norms, bypolls to both these seats should be completed before August.
According to official sources, there is every possibility for the state and EC to delay bypolls in TN during the COVID-19 pandemic as the state would witness a general election in just nine months. However, there would not be any delay in case of the general Assembly elections due in May 2021.
Moreover, no political party in the state was interested to fight any bypolls. “We have lost interest in bypolls that are too expensive,” an AMMK district secretary told DT Next.
