SHRC probe into custodial deaths begins

The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) team has launched a probe into the alleged custodial deaths father-son duo Jayaraj and Bennix in Sathankulam last month.

DSP Kumar, who has been deputed as investigation officer by the SHRC, on Wednesday said family members of the victims and doctors of Sathankulam and Kovilpatti GHs, besides prison authorities were inquired. The SHRC team would hold inquiries with the five cops jailed in Madurai on Thursday.

The team would inquire into any violation of human rights and if both Jayaraj and Bennix were found to be victims of human rights violations, action would be initiated accordingly.

Further a detailed report would be submitted to the SHRC Director General of Police Sunil Kumar and the SHRC Judge Durai Jayachandran.

Meanwhile, the five jailed cops were taken to Sathankulam police station by the CBI team on Wednesday as part of the probe.

On Tuesday night, Muthuraj, constable was escorted from the Madurai CBI office to Sathankulam police station, where the sleuths conducted investigations for nearly an hour from 10 pm, sources said.
