The Minister on Wednesday said that now, efforts are underway to hand over the airfield to the Indian Army. The airfield, which lies on Mangamma Salai on Ettayapuram Road at Pannirkulam near Kayathar, still is in good condition.

Addressing the reporters at Kovilpatti in Thoothukudi district, the Minister ruled out the possibility of reopening of cinema theatres in the state during the current pandemic scenario, which is still a big challenge for the government. Referring to the situation in some foreign countries against the backdrop of COVID-19 infection, he said cinema theatres have started functioning after lockdown restrictions were eased, but only two spectators were allowed to sit in a row. However, the possibility of such a situation seems to be remote in the state as owners of cinema theatres would tend to suffer loss. Moreover, he said the state government is extending all possible help to the Tamil film industry during this crisis situation.

Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami would take a final decision on whether to reopen theatres, based on the COVID-19 impact assessment by medical experts, he said.
