A division bench comprising Justice MM Sundresh and Justice R Hemalatha issued the direction while hearing a public interest litigation moved by advocate R Sudha seeking to ensure that the nutritional need of government school students was not ignored because of the lockdown and that eggs be provided through Amma Canteens. When the government submitted that it was not possible to provide eggs to the students due to COVID-19 spread, the bench suggested using teachers to supply eggs at least once a week.
Citing the plight of girl students who do not have access to sanitary pads due to school closure, the bench asked the government to devise a mechanism to ensure that nutrition and health of the children were taken care of, and posted the plea for further hearing to August 3.
