The move came after the staff recently staged agitations demanding PPE kits after an association office-bearer in Kancheepuram district died of COVID. They also demanded payment of Rs 50 lakh and government job for next of kin similar to that offered by government for other department staff, and also treatment for COVID-19 on a par with other government employees. This resulted in shops being provided with transparent plastic sheets that are hung on the grill at the sales counter to create a barrier between the customers and staff. This was to prevent staff from being infected by customers coughing or sneezing during sales.
