Expressing concern over Centre’s New Education Policy (NEP), which recommended for a three-language policy, Palaniswami asserted that as in the past, the state will continue to follow the two-language policy. Welcoming the state government’s announcement, Tamil Nadu Teachers Association president PK Ilamaran said that two language-system is being followed here continuously. “Forcing the students to have one more language cannot be acceptable,” he added. He said Chief Minister should also come out to oppose board exams for Class 3, Class 5 and Class 8 as it would bring more stress to the children at that age.

“Our state has already cancelled the board exam for these standards and a further official announcement to oppose the Centre’s proposal to conduct exams for these classes will allay the fears of not only children but also parents,” he said.

State Platform for Common School System – Tamil Nadu (SPCSS-TN) general secretary and educationist PB Prince Gajendra Babu also hailed the government’s opposition to the three-language policy, he claimed that if the state had taken a decision to alter the NEP, the Centre could not interfere it as per the rule.

“Every state has the right to take any decision especially in the education sector according to the needs of its people and there is no question of Centre rejecting our own policy,” he said adding “the policy should not force any students to take up another language compulsorily since, Tamil Nadu is being catering to the needs of the students, who want to take up other languages through various private players.”

He also expressed confidence that the state will not implement Centre’s proposal to conduct board exams for Classes 3, 5 and 8 students since the government has already cancelled it.

The educationist also urged the Centre to release full NEP document since it had come out with only points.
