Four-day-old Madurai girl among record 112 fatalities reported in TN
While Tamil Nadu recorded 5,175 fresh cases of COVID-19, the death toll reached an all-time high of 112 on Wednesday, which included a four-day old infant from Madurai with co-morbidities. Of the total cases, 5,135 were from TN while the remaining were returnees.

The four-day-old girl from Madurai was admitted to Government Rajaji Hospital there on July 29 but succumbed to the virus on August 2. She died of acute respiratory distress syndrome. Of the 112 deaths recorded on Wednesday, eight patients did not have co-morbidities. Chennai recorded 25 deaths, with Tiruchy, Thanjavur and Chengalpettu recording seven deaths each.
While the city recorded 1,044 positive cases, among the districts, Chengalpettu reported 487 cases, and Tiruvallur reported 472 cases. Kancheepuram had 342 cases while Theni had 278 cases; Vellore reported another 179 cases, and Kanniyakumari saw 175 cases. Other districts such as Coimbatore, Pudukkottai, Salem, and Thoothukudi recorded over 150 cases each. Thus far, the total number of positive patients tested in TN stands at 2,73,460. The total number of discharged patients amounted to 6,031, bringing the total recoveries to 2,14,815. The recovery rate in the State stands at 78 per cent. A total of 61,116 samples were tested in the past 24 hours bringing the total number of samples tested till date to 29,53,561.
