The elephant aged around 12 years was found battling for life on Saturday. Since then, a team of veterinarians attempted to revive it by administering it with glucose, antibiotics and multivitamin tablets.
Though it showed some initial signs of improvement, the weak and ailing jumbo died on Monday morning. The elephant appeared skinny as it was starving and was unable to consume food. A team led by forest veterinary officer A Sugumar under the supervision of District Forest Officer D Venkatesh performed an autopsy and the carcass was buried at the spot.
Meanwhile, a leopard and a gaur were found dead near a bridge in Coonoor in The Nilgiris on Monday. On receiving information from villagers, a team of Forest Department staff rushed to the spot for inspection. After preliminary examination, officials said that the two animals had been involved in a fight resulting in their death.
