The protesting workers, led by S Veerasekaran, deputy general secretary, SRMU, assembled in front of the DRM office in Junction railway station here, said that the decision to privatise the railways would surrender the national assets to private players and it would also result in huge unemployment besides posing threat to the livelihood of crores of employees.

“In order to lay off the employees, the railways has introduced multi-skilled workers and has planned to surrender around 2 lakh vacancies. Similarly, the handing over of 109 routes to private companies will lead to all 7472 railway stations across the nation going into private hands. We will continue to protest until the move is withdrawn,” said S Veerasekaran.

Veerasekaran also said that the railway property, including movable assets worth Rs. 3.86 lakh crore belonged to the Central Government. All these were the result of the dedicated and sincere work of the railway employees. “We will not let this go to private parties at any cost and will even resort to a rail roko,” warned Veerasekaran.
