The State government should take immediate action against private hospitals that charged excess amounts from COVID patients, said Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president KS Alagiri on Friday.

Accusing the State government of failing to control private hospitals, Alagiri said: “How will action be taken if the Ministers themselves are getting treated at private hospitals instead of government ones?”
Though the government had prescribed between Rs 9,000 and Rs 15,000 that private hospitals could charge, many were levying much more from patients, he said in a statement. Corporate hospitals charge a minimum of Rs 50,000 per day, he said, noting that patients have to pay anywhere between Rs 6 lakh to Rs 10 lakh.
“It seems like daylight robbery,” Alagiri added.
If the government failed to take action to solve the issue, it would be a violation of the government’s own policy on hospital charges, he added.
