Cases in Coimbatore rise steadily as State inches towards 3.5 lakh mark

Continuing the trend, the State recorded a total of 5,890 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday, including 20 imported cases from other states and countries. With this, the total number of cases in Tamil Nadu has reached 3,43,945.

Chennai’s count crossed 1,000 again on Monday with 1,185 more testing positive. However, the number of cases in the neighbouring districts saw a slight decline as Tiruvallur reported 308 cases, Chengalpattu 224 cases and Kancheepuram 174 cases. Meanwhile, Coimbatore and Cuddalore reported 393 and 390 fresh cases. Several other districts including Kanniyakumari, Salem, Theni and Virudhunagar also reported more than 200 cases on Monday. Currently,12,003 people are being treated in several hospitals across the city, bringing the total number of cases to 1,17,839. 

As many as 120 fatalities were reported in the State on Monday, including 36 deaths in private hospitals and 84 from government hospitals. A total of 110 deceased had underlying comorbid conditions, while 10 of them succumbed to the virus after developing respiratory distress and COVID-19 pneumonia. The number of samples tested in the State declined a bit as only 67,532 samples were tested in the past 24 hours. A total of 5,667 persons were discharged from several hospitals across the State. There are 54,122 active cases as of now.
