With the majority of the field workers aged over 50, the workers remain irked over Tangedco’s series of orders since August 10 when they were initially issued temporary diversion order only to modify into a transfer order on August 14. On Monday, members of Tamil Nadu Electricity Board All Trade Union Federation staged a demonstration at the Tangedco headquarters in protest against the en masse transfers.
“The management is so callous that they have posted a staff who died last year to the MRT at MKB Nagar. Another worker was missing for the past seven years and two workers retired earlier this year were also given transfer posting. We don’t know why all of a sudden we were being transferred from the generation wing to the distribution when all the field staff were posted in the North Chennai Thermal Power Station I, II and III,” lamented a field staff.
After the demonstration, the leaders of various trade unions met Tangedco joint managing director S Vineeth. “When the Ennore Thermal Power Plant was decommissioned, the management held talks with trade unions while diverting the staffs working the plant to the North Chennai power station. We had signed an agreement in this regard. We told the JMD that the management should not have taken a unilateral decision to transfer them to the distribution wing,” a trade union leader said.
A senior Tangedco official said the transfers would have been done to fill up vacancies in the distribution wing. “A final decision would be taken by the top management in the next few days,” the official added.
