The newly formed Kallakurichi (north) would comprise Sankarapuram and Ulundurpet constituencies, while Rishivandiyam and Kallakurichi (reserve) seats would constitute the Kallakurichi (south) party districts.
The reorganisation has been done in tune with the creation of Kallakurichi revenue district, which was carved out of Villupuram a few months ago. With the creation of the two districts, the total number of DMK party districts has increased to 67.
Announcing the new districts creation, DMK president MK Stalin also appointed party MLAs T Udayasuriyan and Vasantham Karthikeyan as in charge of Kallakurichi north and south districts, respectively. The party high command has also constituted a committee comprising over half a dozen members each for the two districts.
A Angayarkanni, who has been heading Villupuram (south) district thus far, has been appointed deputy secretary of the party women’s wing headed by Thoothukudi MP Kanimozhi.
Less than a week ago, the DMK had done similar reorganisation in Coimbatore by changing the composition of Assembly constituencies in the party districts there. Unlike Kallakurichi party districts, which were necessitated by the creation of a new Kallakurichi revenue district, Coimbatore party district reorganisation was necessitated by internal bickering. Coimbatore party unit was restructured after a review by principal headquarters secretary KN Nehru, who was deputed by Stalin to set things in order in the textile city where complaints poured in against the incumbent district secretaries among other functionaries, a few of whom were accused to colluding with ruling AIADMK leaders.
DMK insiders privy to the ongoing reorganisation process suggest that the principal opposition party might go for a rejig in a few more party districts to placate disgruntled party functionaries ahead of the 2021 Assembly election.
