Surge in western TN dists, over 75K samples tested

More than 15 per cent of the new COVID-19 cases reported in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday came from just two districts in western Tamil Nadu. Of the 5,958 cases, Coimbatore reported 484 while Salem had 451.

The spurt in cases has prompted the administration to focus on clusters outside Chennai, though the city continued to report the most number of cases adding 1,290 to the tally.

The State’s tally is near to the 4 lakh mark as a total of 3,97,261 people have been infected so far. The number of samples significantly increased as 75,500, including, 73,631 people were tested in the past 24 hours. Four more private laboratories, including Healthcare Diagnostics Services in Dharmapuri, Thangam X-Rays and Computerised Clinical Laboratory in Namakkal, Samrutha Diagnostic in Namakkal & Metropolis Healthcare Ltd in Coimbatore have been recently approved for testing.

Health Department officials said that the number of cases in the city are under control and being managed effectively. The focus is on other districts with high number of cases where similar efforts are on. Over the past 24 hours, 329 cases were reported in Kancheepuram, 294 in Chengalpattu, 286 cases were reported in Cuddalore, and 280 cases were reported in Tiruvallur.

The death toll in the State has reached 6,839 with 118 fatalities being reported in several hospitals on Wednesday, including 41 in private hospitals and 77 in government hospitals. Recoveries were 5,606 as the cumulative number of people cured rose to 3,38,060. Currently, there are 52,362 active cases of COVID-19 in the State.
