Follow reservation policy strictly: UGC

As admissions for the students to higher education in colleges in Tamil Nadu were currently on, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked the state to ensure that the universities and other institutions strictly implement the government’s reservation policy.

UGC, in its latest circular, stated that the commission is continuously monitoring the progress of implementation of reservation policy for SCs, STs and OBC, EWS and persons with disabilities in admission process and as well as in appointing teaching and non-teaching posts to all levels in universities and colleges.

Stating that the UGC has to ensure effective implementation of the reservation policy in universities and institutions receiving aid from the public funds, the commission, in a communication to the state, said that all centrally funded universities, colleges and other institutions are required to ensure strict compliance of Centre’s orders/rules on the reservation in their institutions.

Pointing out that the state universities, including its affiliated and constituent colleges and other institutes should follow the percentage of reservation for SC/ST & OBC as prescribed by the concerned state government, it said, “all the institutions should be instructed to display the reservation roster which is to be updated at regular intervals on their respective websites as per the instructions issued.”

The commission also asked the state to request the institution to fill up remaining backlog identified reserved vacancies of these categories in teaching and non- teaching posts, to furnish a report along with statistical information in respect that as well as admissions to all level courses and hostel accommodations in the university activity monitoring portal during 2020-2021.

Meanwhile, the UGC also extended the date to October 31 to receive feedback and suggestions from the stakeholders on outline of National Education Policy (NEP 2020) implementation plan.

“The discussion on outline of the implementation plan on NEP is live on MyGov portal and the last date to submit feedback currently till October 19 has been extended till 31,” the commission said.

In addition, the UGC has also released two banners, which should be utilised for creating awareness among the public on website of the institutions.
