This is expected to increase enrolment in government primary schools, which have already received an additional one lakh admissions this year.

Many parents, especially from the southern region, evince interest to enrol their children on Vijayadasami, which falls on October 26. “Therefore, all district education officers were asked to instruct all the government and aided primary schools, including Anganwadi centres, to conduct special enrolment drives to admit kids on Monday,” said senior official from the Directorate of Elementary Education.

On that day, parents will be invited to the institution and offered flowers and sweets. “Arrangements have also been made to distribute freebies, including free textbooks, to the children immediately after the admission process is over,” he said.

According to the official, instructions and circulars have been sent to the school managements to identify five-yearold children in their respective region, and give them spot admission with the consent of the parents.

“Banners and posters will be displayed near school premises to create awareness among parents about the special enrolment on Vijayadasami,” he said.

Last year, about 3,000 children enrolled in LKG, UKG, and Class 1 in government schools on the day. This year, it is expected to go up to around 5,000 kids.

There are about 24,300 government primary schools and about 5,000 government-aided elementary schools in the State.
