The state government opened as many as 841 Direct Purchase Centres (DPCs) post-Kuruvai harvest and instructed to procure 1000 bags per day to avoid the accumulation of stocks. However, against the

government order, the DPCs had procured between 700 and 800 bags per day.

Since the delay in procurement, the paddy bags were piled up before the DPCs across the region.

Meanwhile, there was rain for several days and the paddy piled before the DPCs was soaked in water and it had worsened the situation as the officials procured the paddy with just 17 per cent of moisture

content.

The farmers, however, went on demanding to increase the moisture content to 22 per cent and they also staged a series of protests to increase the moisture content.

In such a backdrop, the TNCSC Managing Director Sudha Devi who visited the delta informed that a central team would visit the region and recommend the government if needed.

Meanwhile, on Saturday a three-member team led by Yatentra Jain visited the Cauvery Delta region. The team visited the spot collected the samples of paddy.

They said that the samples would be sent to the regional laboratory of FCI to analyse and the report would be submitted before the Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution who would decide on the increase of moisture content.
