ELCOT to train govt college teachers in AI

In a first, all the teachers in the state-run higher education institutions, including engineering, science and polytechnic colleges, will be imparted training in emerging technologies through ICT Academy, run by Electronic Corporation of Tamil Nadu (Elcot).

Mooted by the Directorate of Technical Education (DOTE), training will be given in subjects such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Blockchain, Cloud Computing, and Cyber Security. The curriculum has been formulated aimed at making the transmission of knowledge from industry to the faculty with highly effective tools.

A senior official from the DOTE told DT Next that the training programme will improve the professional competency of faculty members working in government institutions.

“It enables the teaching community to update themselves with the emerging technology and conducting research activities in the emerging areas,” he added.

Stating that since faculty members are considered the driving force behind any institution, he said the advance technology training for them will eventually help update the knowledge of students as well and help them achieve more placements by increasing their employability.

Stating that the training would take the teachers and students a step closer to the latest industry standards, the official said the faculty members will be exposed to the trending technologies, thus enabling the students be industry-ready.

Pointing out that about 5,000 faculties from various government colleges will be picked up for training during the first phase, he said Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation will also be involved to further guide the teachers in the programmes.

“The training project deliverables include industry-endorsed curriculum, demand-based courses, course materials for trainees, self-learning materials and workbooks for exercises and certification for all programmes,” he said.
