The meeting with the leaders assumes significance as the Supreme Court had recently was unhappy with regard to pardon plea by Rajiv Gandhi assassination case convicts which is pending for two years at the Raj Bhavan. However, Raj Bhavan sources did not attach any such significance to the meeting.
With political parties in the state, including AIADMK ally Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) blaming the Governor for taking too much time to release Rajiv Gandhi assassination convicts, sources from Raj Bhavan, seeking anonymity, said that the Governor would have discussed about the decision to be taken for releasing the seven convicts.
In September 2018, the Tamil Nadu Cabinet in its recommendation had sought under Article 161, the Governor’s approval for remitting the sentence of Perarivalan and six others who are in jail for more than 25 years in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.
Though the Governor’s office said that it was waiting for the Multi-Disciplinary Monitoring Agency (MDMA) investigation report to decide on the remission, the Supreme Court had recently clarified that the MDMA probe should not have any impact on the Governor’s decision for offering pardon for the convicts.
After the Delhi visit, there is expectation and speculation that major decisions could have been taken in Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination convicts’ issue.
However, sources clarified that the Ministry of Home Affairs had to clear decks in the case and only then the Governor could take a call on the release of the convicts.
Sources further added the Banwarilal Purohit also discussed with the leaders about his recent consent for a 7.5 per cent horizontal reservation for the government school students seeking MBBS seats in the state.
