According to police, an out of work weaver Murugan (38) of Rayanpettai near Kil Pennanthur was married to Devika (28). The couple had two daughters Shivani (10) and Meena (8).

Murugan was unemployed due to the pandemic and hence Meena worked in a hotel to make ends meet.

This resulted in Murugan suspecting Devika’s fidelity leading to almost daily quarrels between the couple.

On Tuesday night when Devika came home after work, they again quarrelled and Murugan went out. He returned home late and seeing his sleeping daughters, he became enraged and so he clubbed both of them with an iron rod. While Shivani was killed on the spot, Devika who intervened on hearing her daughter’s screams was also injured by her husband.

Neighbours who rushed in on hearing the screams sent both Devika and Meena to the Tiruvannamalai Government Medical College hospital where doctors declared Meena brought dead.

Devika was then referred to the Vellore government medical college hospital.

In a fit of remorse, Murugan who had run out after the melee, returned and tried to commit suicide by consuming poison.

He was rushed by neighbours to the Tiruvannamalai Medical College hospital while Kil Pennathur police registered a case and sent the bodies of the two children for post mortem.
