Rains expected to move to south TN for 48 hours

Following two nights of continuous rain, Chennai is expected to receive a break for 48 hours, while southern Tamil Nadu is expected to receive heavy rain.

On Tuesday, Chennai recorded 39 mm and 29 mm of rainfall at Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam respectively.

“Moderate to heavy rain is expected in most parts of south Tamil Nadu during the next 48 hours and light to moderate rain in a few places in north Tamil Nadu. Thoothukudi is expected to receive strong rains over the next 48 hours,” said N Puviarasan, director, Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai.

Warning has been issued for fishermen to refrain from venturing into the sea and to return from deep sea due to hurricane winds at 40 to 50 kmph along the coast of Kumarikadal, Maldives, coastal Kerala, Lakshadweep Islands and south-east parts of the Arabian Sea. Districts such as Pudukkottai, Nagapattinam, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Thoothukudi and Kanniyakumari will experience heavy showers will have heavy rains and possible thunderstorms over the next 24 hours. Meanwhile, Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur region is expected to have a break for 48 hours. “The weather activity just outside Chennai is moving into city right now and as a result rain intensity has increased in parts of the city. Overall, rains are expected to reduce step by step from tomorrow in [the region],” said popular weather blogger Pradeep John.
