The victim identified as Sakunthala (48), who earlier took her son Pradeep out on bail felt ashamed when police visited her house again and quizzed Pradeep over a property crime on Monday. While the police were trying to recover the stolen items from Pradeep and his accomplices Arulraj and Anburaj in a reported robbery on November 3 and conducting inquiry into charges of engaging in such crime, Sakunthala set herself ablaze after pouring kerosene. All the events occurred within 50 to 60 meters in the house and the police personnel tried their best to rescue the woman. She was rushed to the hospital by an ambulance. But she succumbed to burns on the way.
Pradeep was already facing charges in a POCSO case and arrested for marrying a minor girl.
Tirunelveli Superintendent of Police N Manivannan, denied any police action leading to the suicide.
Further, the SP said the Tirunelveli District Crime Branch has been ordered to conduct a fair probe into the incident.
