Cautionary signals could go up depending on the intensity of the cyclone and based on urgent alert, if any, from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), sources said. Usually, under such circumstances, storm warning signals are hoisted at the mast of the Port to alert ships of the prevailing weather conditions in the Port.
However, Port operations continue as usual with necessary precautions in place. As of now, a total of thirteen cargo vessels remain berthed at the seaport in Thoothukudi.
The VOC Port has a total of fourteen berths to accommodate vessels, sources said.
