No respite from rains: Cuddalore and Delta districts heavily flooded

With the weakened depression stalled over Rameswaram for more than 40 hours now, the districts around Rameswaram, Thoothukudi, Cuddalore and Delta districts have been receiving heavy to very heavy rainfall for the past 4 days, resulting in severe waterlogging.

Meanwhile, the Rameswaram district which is near the eye of the depression has been facing power outage.

Due to the heavy rains, the Cauvery delta region farmers are worried as the paddy crops were left inundated. Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur districts also largely bore the brunt of Burevi influenced rain.

According to preliminary estimates, about 1,50,000 hectares of samba/thaladi crops are believed to have been inundated in Thiruvarur district. Crop inundation was also largely reported in Thanjavur district with nearly 25,000 hectares of paddy crops inundated.

While transport services have been paused in few areas in Cuddalore districts, there were reports of rainwater entering the houses in low lying areas.

Parts of Thoothukudi witnessed waterlogging following rainfall in the city in the wake of Cyclone Burevi.

Meanwhile, the RMC further tweeted, "The sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy. Few spells of light to moderate rain is likely to occur in some areas."

Chennai saw chilly weather and cloudy skies on Saturday, with overnight rain and showers all through the day. Around 35.4 and 40.6 mm of rainfall was recorded in Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam respectively.  Moderate to heavy rainfall, with thundershowers and cloudy skies, are expected in the city over the next 48 hours.
