“Thunderstorm with lightning is likely to occur at isolated places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal area,” said N Puviarasan, director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai.

Heavy rainfall is likely to occur at isolated places over Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Sivaganga and Virudhunagar districts over the next 24 hours, while north Tamil Nadu, coastal districts and other isolated areas of the state can expect moderate rainfall and thunderstorms.

Having remained still over the next 72 hours, the weather conditions is expected to weaken, said weather blogger Pradeep John. “When low in Gulf of Mannar, the convergence of winds rarely happens in interiors and most of the rains will be limited to areas in coast and districts nearby. After 72 hours, Burevi which is now a low pressure area (LPA), is expected to say goodbye to Tamil Nadu. It is the best rainfall cyclone for Tamil Nadu since Nisha in 2008. Burevi will be spoken and remembered for years to come, just like Nisha was,” said the founder of the page Tamil Nadu Weatherman.

Chennai saw mild rains on Sunday, with Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recording 25.2 and 20.5 mm of rainfall respectively. Maximum temperatures were 30 and 29.9 C respectively, and minimum temperatures were 24.3 and 22.6 C respectively.

Over the next 48 hours, sky conditions will remain cloudy, with light to moderate rains and temperatures between 30 C to 24 C.
