Justice Kulasekaran to head caste census panel

“To frame modalities to collect quantifiable data on castes and to undertake caste census a commission under the chairmanship of Justice Kulasekaran will be appointed,” said Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami in a statement.

On the lines of 1987 protest, PMK staged a protest, on December 1, demanding 20 per cent reservation for Vanniyar community and urged state government to undertake caste census. In the protest, public properties, including trains were damaged as PMK cadre pelted stones on the trains and public properties.

To bring an end to the protests, Chief Minister met PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss and assured that state government will take steps to undertake caste census and to provide 20 per cent reservation for Vanniyar community.

On the same day, the state announced formation of a commission to undertake caste census.

Following the announcement, the state government appointed the retired judge for the commission, which according to Chief Minister will start its work immediately and will submit the report at the earliest.

Chief Minister Palaniswami further said that the state government, which is functioning on the lines of the late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, will ensure that social justice is delivered to all the people in the state.
