A senior Congress leader revealed that talks were happening between the DMK and actor Vijayakanth’s DMDK.

Unwilling to disclose the details, the Congress leader said that the DMDK could most likely defect to the secular camp.

A Congress MP, close to AICC high command, confirmed the talks and said, “I think they will join us (alliance). We heard that DMK and DMDK leaders are holding talks. We were told that the talks have been fruitful so far. A confirmation might happen in a few weeks.”

Unsurprisingly, the Congress leaders were wary of the impact such an addition could have on their seat tally.

“We are aware of the Left, MDMK and VCK. If one or more parties join the alliance, it will reduce our tally. As our leaders had stated, we will not drive a hard bargain. Our expectation and even talks would be realistic,” the MP reasoned.

However, when contacted, DMK organising secretary RS Bharathi denied anyone approaching from the DMDK. Asked if they would consider any parties joining the alliance, Bharathi said, “It is for our president to decide. He has already clarified that our alliance is strong.”
