CM visits Delta, says farm bills not harmful

Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, who inspected cyclone-hit regions in Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur districts on Wednesday, reiterated that the Centre’s Agri Bills would help the farmers of Tamil Nadu. So the state government has welcomed it, but at the same time the government would oppose any project that affects the farmers, he added.

After visiting affected places in both the districts, the Chief Minister told reporters that the state has already written to the Centre to send a team to assess the damage caused by the heavy rains due to Cyclone Nivar and Burevi and release adequate funds. He said that Cyclone Nivar claimed six lives, injured 12 persons and 381 cattle died. As many as 4,398 houses were damaged and 12,187 ha paddy and 3,473 ha horticulture crops.

While the heavy rains due to the Cyclone Burevi claimed seven lives, injured nine persons and 219 cattle died. As many as 5,509 houses damaged and with the latest assessment, 53,063 ha paddy, 13,250 ha other crops and 561 ha banana crops were damaged. Still, water is stagnating on several fields and the respective districts collectors are asked to assess the damage and send a report, he said.

Meanwhile, he said that the Salem-Chennai Eight Lane project is a Central government project and the state government is only helping in acquisition of land. Answering to a query about DMK leader A Raja’s debate invitation, the Chief Minister said that he was not so important a man for AIADMK to make a call for debate and stressed that the appeal against the 2G case has been accepted and people will come to know his status once the case has been opened, he said.

Earlier, the Chief Minister visited the Nagore Dargah and the Shrine Velankanni and sought blessings. Later, he inspected the samba crop submerged in the fields in both Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur districts. He also visited relief camps and distributed relief material to people affected by the rain. He also served food to those accommodated at the camp. He also interacted with the farmers and received petitions from them.

State allots Rs 74 cr as Nivar relief
The state issued a Government Order (GO) allotting Rs 74.24 crore to undertake relief works post Cyclone Nivar.
According to the GO, the fund from State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) had been allotted to district administrations and various departments including PWD, Agriculture, Highways, Tangedco, Rural Development, Public Health, Fisheries, Forest, Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), Chennai Metro Water and Municipal Administration.
In the preliminary assessment done by the state, six persons have died due to Cyclone Nivar in Tiruvallur, Villupuram and Tirupattur districts. Chief Minister announced Rs 10 lakh per family of deceased as compensation and among the Rs 10 lakh Rs 4 lakh would be given from SDRF while the remaining Rs 6 lakh would be from Chief Ministers relief fund. Nearly, 2,197 huts and houses were damaged due to Cyclone Nivar and Rs 59 lakh had been allotted as compensation. For the 264 livestock and 5,107 poultry were lost in the cyclone, Rs 41 lakh had been allotted as relief.
Rs 10 crore had been allotted to GCC to carry out repair works in the city.
