Rain expected in coastal and delta dists over next 48 hours

After nearly a week of sunny skies, Chennai may see light to moderate rain over the next 48 hours, while delta and coastal districts may see heavy rain, said weather experts. While most districts will see moderate rains, thundershowers are also expected.

“Moderate rain or thundershower is likely to occur at a few places over coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal area. Light to moderate rain or thundershower is likely to occur at a few places over interior Tamil Nadu today (Tuesday),” said N Puviarasan, director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai.

Heavy rainfall is expected over Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukottai districts, and Karaikal, over the next 48 hours. Thunderstorms with lighting are expected over isolated parts of the State till December 19.

“The Easterlies have begun to move in across the Bay of Bengal. As the easterlies push in, the northerlies will be pushed up. The Delta districts will receive winds from the easterlies, and the coastal districts will receive rain from the northerlies,” said weather blogger Srikanth K, who runs the Facebook page ChennaiRains.

In Chennai, the sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy over the next 48 hours, with light to moderate rain expected. The general temperature will be between 30 degrees and 23 degrees Celsius.
