Due to continuous rains, the ready for harvest paddy were submerged in several areas including Orathanady, Uloor, Sadayarkovil, Soorakottai and Thuraiyundarkottai and the water slowly started to drain and so the farmers commenced the harvest of the paddy. In such circumstances, a DPC that was functioning in Thennamanadu near Orathanadu remained closed for the past one week despite the farmers beelining the centre with their harvested paddy.

Despite the farmers approaching the centre for the past few days, the officials maintained silence and failed to open the centre. On Monday, the farmers who came there with their paddy loads were shocked to find the DPC was closed. Subsequently, the irate farmers blocked the Orathanadu-Pattukkottai road with their tractors and bullock carts. They also raised slogans and claimed that the officials are lethargic to open the DPC.

Orathanadu police rushed to the spot and held talks with the agitating farmers. Upon the assurance by police, the farmers dispersed. Traffic was disrupted for more than one hour at Orathanadu-Pattukottai highway.
